Abraham Joseph Sanchez
The “Familia de Sanchez” has a long and colorful past of triumphs and tragedies through out the centuries. Born in 1570, Mariana Juarez Sanchez was from a family of Shepardic Jews that had endured decades of persecution from the ongoing Catholic Inquisitions in Spain. The Family made the hard but adventurous decision to leave the Iberian peninsula for New Spain in the 1580. After living a few years south of Mexico City she met her husband Pedro De Inigo.

In 1596 she and Pedro embarked to Monterey where they were considered to be one of 12 founding families of a new Kingdom- Nuevo León which they had hoped to have new freedoms- including religious freedom. However within a few years, the Sanchez’s had to return to Mexico City once again due to religious persecution.
It wouldn’t be until 60 years later that the Sanchez’s left Mexico City and moved to Albuquerque. Although the Jesuit inquisitors would come from time to time, New Mexico generally offered religious freedom that few places in Mexico did. The Sanchez family stayed in New Mexico for the next 200 years until finally coming to California in search of a better life.
